Every machine needs energy to function, and our bodies are no exception. Many think energy is only needed for activities like working or running, but even at rest, our organs require it.
Energy can be produced in various ways, such as hydraulic, kinetic, or nuclear. One key method is burning materials—like wood, which generates heat. Our bodies use a similar process called metabolism.
Burning happens when a material mixes with oxygen, a process known as oxidation in chemistry. We eat food and inhale oxygen, which combine in our cells with the help of catalysts. The food is oxidised (burnt), producing energy.
